IEC 60529 is a standard that outlines the degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment. The standard provides a classification system that describes the level of protection provided by the enclosure against solid objects, water, and other environmental factors.

Inlet protection, in this context, refers to the protection provided by an enclosure against the ingress of water through its inlet. The standard specifies various tests that can be performed to assess the degree of protection provided by the enclosure’s inlet against water ingress.

At C&C Technologies Inc. our tests involve subjecting the enclosure to various conditions, such as spraying water from different angles and at different pressures, immersing the enclosure in water to a certain depth, and exposing it to high-pressure water jets. The enclosure is then inspected for any signs of water ingress.

C&C Technologies performs IP Dust Testing for first numeral 6 and 7 & IP Water testing for second numeral 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Based on the results of the tests, the enclosure can be classified according to its level of protection against water ingress. The classification system ranges from IP00 (no protection against water ingress) to IP68 (protection against long periods of immersion under pressure).

It is important to note that while the IEC 60529 standard provides a framework for testing the degree of protection provided by an enclosure, it does not guarantee that the enclosure will be completely protected against all environmental factors. Other factors, such as the quality of the enclosure’s construction and maintenance, must also be taken into consideration.
